Brent Nelsen to Run for State’s Top Education Job
Brent Nelsen said the state’s weak public education system contributes as ‘public offender number one’ to the state’s struggling economy and record unemployment rate as he formally announced his bid for Superintendent of Education today.
Nelsen, who has been traveling across the state during his exploratory Jobs for the Future Tour and has met with community, political, education and business leaders.
During this tour he has been able to visit schools and community organizations that he says have really brought home the need for reform and improvement of our school system.
“No one understands the value of preparing our young people to compete in a 21st century economy more than I do,” said Nelsen. “Right now our public schools are failing and it is time we had a 21st century education system that prepares our children for the future.”
Nelsen will continue his Jobs for the Future Tour across the state meeting with hardworking South Carolinians to address the issues facing our schools and how we can fix those problems to give South Carolina a real chance for success in the future.
Nelsen also announced that Senator Jim DeMint would serve as honorary chairman of his campaign for Superintendent.
“It is an honor to be endorsed and supported by my good friend Senator Jim DeMint.” said Nelsen. “Senator DeMint and I share the same passion of improving South Carolina’s economy and I believe that in order to do that we must start with the education of our children”
Nelsen said he would be rolling out specifics of his education plan in the near future. He said his plan would focus on choices for parents, accountability of both teachers and students.
